Sacramento’s Commitment to Environmental Justice and Sustainability

Sacramento’s Commitment to Environmental Justice and Sustainability

Sacramento is actively pursuing environmental justice and sustainability to ensure a healthier future for all residents. The city’s approach emphasizes equitable climate action and robust community involvement.

Environmental Justice Initiatives

At the heart of Sacramento’s environmental efforts is a commitment to environmental justice, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of background, have access to a clean and healthy environment. The city’s Environmental Justice Element, part of the 2040 General Plan, outlines strategies to address disparities in environmental health and access to resources. This includes initiatives like the Home Energy Equity Pilot, which provides free heat pumps and other upgrades to underserved communities, and the Equitable and Resilient Urban Forest Project, aimed at enhancing tree canopy coverage in neighborhoods lacking green spaces. Additionally, the city supports community gardens and food justice programs to improve food access and promote sustainable practices. [Source: City of Sacramento Environmental Justice Initiatives]

Climate Action and Adaptation Plan

In February 2024, Sacramento adopted the Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP) alongside the 2040 General Plan. The CAAP sets ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change impacts. Key goals include reducing per capita emissions to 3.63 metric tons of CO₂e by 2030, a 63% reduction from 1990 levels. The plan focuses on sectors such as transportation and building energy use, which are significant contributors to the city’s emissions. [Source: City of Sacramento Climate Action & Adaptation Plan]

Community Engagement and Partnerships

Collaboration with local organizations is vital to Sacramento’s environmental efforts. The River City Waterway Alliance, for instance, has organized over 1,000 volunteer clean-up events since January 2023, removing more than 3.8 million pounds of debris from local waterways. Similarly, the Cleaner Air Partnership brings together diverse stakeholders to improve air quality and public health in the region. [Sources: River City Waterway Alliance, Cleaner Air Partnership]

Through these comprehensive initiatives and partnerships, Sacramento demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental justice and sustainability, striving to create a resilient and equitable community for all residents.
