Sacramento’s Commitment to Environmental Justice and Sustainability

Sacramento’s Commitment to Environmental Justice and Sustainability

Sacramento is actively addressing environmental challenges through a series of initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability and environmental justice. These efforts are designed to mitigate climate change impacts and ensure equitable access to a healthy environment for all residents.

Climate Action & Adaptation Plan

The City of Sacramento has developed a comprehensive Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP) to guide its response to climate change. The CAAP outlines strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate-related impacts. Key components include:

  • Greenhouse Gas Inventory: Identifying major emission sources, such as transportation and buildings, to set reduction targets and track progress.
  • Emission Reduction Goals: Aiming to reduce per capita emissions to 3.63 metric tons of CO₂e by 2030, a 63% decrease from 1990 levels.

Environmental Justice Initiatives

Recognizing that climate change disproportionately affects marginalized communities, Sacramento is committed to environmental justice. Efforts include:

  • Tree Canopy Equity: Implementing the Equitable and Resilient Urban Forest Project to enhance tree coverage in underserved areas.
  • Electrification Pilots: Launching the Home Energy Equity pilot to provide free heat pumps and energy upgrades to low-income households.
  • Community Engagement: Establishing the Sacramento Environmental Justice Collaborative Governance Committee to involve residents in decision-making processes.

Waste Diversion and Sustainable Water Use

To promote sustainability, the city has implemented programs focused on waste reduction and water conservation:

  • Organics Recycling: Complying with SB 1383 by introducing food waste diversion programs to reduce landfill use.
  • Edible Food Recovery: Facilitating the donation of surplus food to combat food insecurity and minimize waste.
  • Water Conservation: Enhancing irrigation systems and offering community education to ensure sustainable water use.

Community Involvement

Local organizations play a vital role in Sacramento’s environmental efforts. The River City Waterway Alliance, for example, has organized over 1,000 volunteer clean-up events, removing more than 3.8 million pounds of debris from waterways since January 2023. Such community-driven initiatives are essential for restoring and protecting the region’s natural resources.

Through these comprehensive strategies and active community participation, Sacramento is making significant strides toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
